Video subtitles

Each video in a presentation can have its own subtitles with timing and styling — works across the editor, Present mode, and MP4 export.

How to open the editor

  1. Insert a video in the slide (toolbar → 🎬)
  2. In the right properties panel, a Subtitles section appears below Video
  3. You see:
    • Embedded video with live preview of the active cue
    • List of cues (timing + text)
    • Add buttons
    • Collapsible "Subtitle style" and "Advanced actions" sections

Adding a cue (subtitle)

3 ways:

  1. @ {time} + (blue button) — adds a cue at the current video playback time. You then type the text.
  2. + (border button) — adds a cue at the end (startMs = endMs of the last, duration 2 s).
  3. Auto-distribute from text (in Advanced actions) — paste text, splits into sentences, distributes evenly across video duration.

Each cue has:

  • Start (time as mm:ss.s) — click 🕒 to insert current video time
  • End (time as mm:ss.s) — same
  • Textarea with subtitle text
  • 🗑 remove

The active cue (currently showing) is highlighted in brand color.

Subtitle style (global per video)

The Subtitle style section (collapsible) lets you set:

  • Font — dropdown same as text objects
  • Size — slider 2–15% of video height (default 5%)
  • Bold / Italic — toggle
  • Text color — color picker, default white
  • Background color — color picker + opacity slider (default #000 70%)
  • Position — top / bottom (default bottom)
  • Alignment — L / C / R (default C)
  • Padding + Radius — for background box

Size relative to video = scales with video size. Same style works whether the video is small or covers the whole slide.

Reset to defaults — button at the bottom clears everything.

Per-cue style override

Each cue can override the global style for itself:

  1. Click 🎨 (Palette) icon on the cue row
  2. A violet panel opens with controls:
    • Size / Bold / Italic
    • Text color / Background color
    • Position (top / bottom)
  3. Each property has × to remove (back to global style)
  4. Reset button at the top = clear all per-cue overrides

Use case: main text white, one key cue red and larger for emphasis.

AI cue translation

Language tabs above the cue list:

  • Primary | EN | DE | ... | + Add
  • Click a tab to switch the whole cue list to that language (edit translation)
  • × on the tab removes the language from all cues (with confirmation)
  • + Add opens a dropdown with remaining languages (en/de/fr/es/it/pl/sk/uk)

When you switch to a non-primary language, a violet "Translate AI ({lang})" button appears. Click:

  1. Sends the text of all cues to AI translation
  2. Saves the translation with each cue
  3. Pre-fills the textareas — you can edit manually

Cost: translation uses AI credits according to the length of the text — see the current price list in AI credits — how they work.

Indicator in primary view — under each cue, small green badges (EN, DE, ...) show which languages it's already translated to.

Advanced actions

Collapsible "Advanced actions" section with 3 tools:

1. Auto-distribute from text (✨)

Paste text → splits into sentences (. ! ?) → distributes evenly across video duration. Requires loaded video (for duration).

2. Import VTT / SRT (📥)

Paste .vtt or .srt file content. Auto-detects format. Supports:

  • VTT with WEBVTT header
  • SRT with sequence numbers
  • HH:MM:SS.mmm and MM:SS.mmm timestamps

3. Export VTT / SRT (📤)

2 buttons → copies formatted content to clipboard (✓ indication 1.5s).

Preview in the editor

In the main canvas, the subtitle is shown directly over the video — you see exactly how it looks in the slide context (other object positions, animations, etc.).

Toggle at the top of the Subtitles section: Preview in editor ON/OFF — if subtitles get in the way when positioning surrounding elements, turn it off. The choice is remembered in your browser.

Rendering — where subtitles appear

PlaceBehavior
Editor canvasActive cue right over the video; follows the preview toggle
Small player in the properties panelActive cue over the video
PresentingActive cue over the video, in the language chosen for captions
MP4 exportCaptions of an embedded video are always burned in (in the language chosen in the export)

In Present mode and export, subtitle language is shared with slide narration captions — one choice for the whole presentation.

Embedded video captions vs. script captions: the captions you set up here for a video are always burned into the MP4. Captions from the slide script (narration) are burned into the MP4 only when you tick Burn captions into video in the Export & Share dialog.

Tips

  • Short cues (< 5 s) are easier to follow
  • Size 4–6% of video height — readable without overwhelming content
  • Background alpha 70–80% gives better text contrast over varied videos
  • AI translations always review manually — model occasionally misses context
  • Auto-distribute is a quick start, but manually adjust timing for better sync with spoken word in the video
